St. Louis Group Rides: Joining the Local Cycling Scene

St. Louis has one of the most active group-ride scenes in the Midwest, with options every week for every pace and discipline. Joining a group ride is the fastest way to meet other cyclists, discover new routes, and push your fitness. Here's how to find your place in the local scene.

Find the Right Ride for Your Level

The St. Louis Cycling Club hosts weekly no-drop social rides on Saturdays from Forest Park, covering 12 to 25 miles at a conversational pace. For a faster workout, Big Shark and other shops run weekday evening training rides. Gravel riders should look at Gateway Gravel Grinders' Sunday rides out of Augusta. Mountain bikers have Thursday and Sunday rides at Castlewood through the St. Louis Mountain Bike Riders group.

Understand Ride Categories

Rides are usually labeled by pace and whether they're no-drop. 'A' or 'fast' rides hold 20mph-plus and expect you to keep up or find your way home. 'B' rides run 16 to 18mph. 'No-drop' means the group waits at regroup points, ideal for newcomers.

Group Ride Etiquette

Call out road hazards — 'car back,' 'hole right,' 'gravel.' Hold your line in the paceline and don't half-wheel the rider beside you. Point to obstacles for riders behind you, and never brake suddenly in the middle of the group.

Show Up Prepared

Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early with a bike in good working order, a flat-fix kit, and enough water for the ride distance. Introduce yourself to the ride leader, especially at your first ride, so they know you're new.

Specialty Rides

Beyond road and gravel, St. Louis has women's-only rides through River City Women's Cycling, family rides through Trailnet, and charity rides like the Tour de Cure and Bike MS that draw thousands and welcome all abilities.

Weather and Cancellations

Most groups post cancellations for rain or high heat on their websites or social media. When in doubt, check before you drive to the start.

Whatever your speed or bike, there's a St. Louis group ride that will welcome you — and once you're a regular, you'll wonder how you ever rode alone.
