St. Louis is a great city for family cycling, with flat, paved greenways, car-free park loops, and plenty of destinations kids actually want to ride to. With the right route and a little preparation, you can build family rides that kids love and that build lifelong cycling habits. Here's where to start.
Forest Park
The 6-mile paved loop is the gold standard for family cycling in St. Louis. It's car-free, mostly flat, and packed with kid-friendly stops — the Zoo, the Jewel Box, Art Hill, and the Boathouse. Shorten the ride by cutting through interior paths when little legs get tired.
Creve Coeur Lake Park
A 3.7-mile paved loop around a calm lake with playgrounds, restrooms, and kayak rentals. It's flat, scenic, and short enough for young riders. The lake path is wide, so kids can ride side by side with parents.
Grant's Trail
This flat, 8-mile paved rail-trail is smooth and separated from traffic, with Grant's Farm as a destination at one end. An out-and-back to the farm and back is a memorable family outing.
Katy Trail Short Sections
For older kids ready for a longer ride, short Katy Trail sections like the Augusta to Dutzow stretch are flat and scenic, with winery snacks and river views as the reward.
Gear for Family Rides
Make sure kids' bikes fit — a bike that's too big is hard to control. Helmets are non-negotiable. Bring snacks, water, and a basic flat kit. A bike seat or trailer works for the youngest riders; tag-along bikes bridge the gap between trailer and independent riding.
Timing and Rest
Plan for short distances and frequent stops, especially in heat. Morning rides in summer avoid the worst heat. Build in a destination — a playground, a treat, or an animal sighting — so the ride has a payoff beyond the exercise.
Safety on Greenways
Teach kids to stay right, pass on the left with a call-out, and stop at road crossings. St. Louis greenways are shared with pedestrians, so model good etiquette from the start.
With the right route and a kid-friendly destination, family cycling is one of the best ways to enjoy St. Louis together.
