The Katy Trail is the longest developed rail-trail in the United States, stretching 240 miles across Missouri along the old Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad corridor. For St. Louis riders, the western sections near Augusta and Defiance are an easy day trip and the perfect introduction to rail-trail riding. Here's how to make your first Katy Trail ride a great one.

Choose the Right Bike

The Katy Trail is crushed limestone, firm enough for road bikes with 28mm-plus tires in dry conditions, but a gravel, hybrid, or mountain bike is far more forgiving. Tire pressure matters: run slightly lower pressure for comfort and grip on the loose surface.

Pick a Short, Scenic Section

First-timers should start with the Augusta to Dutzow stretch, about 18 miles round-trip if you ride out and back to a winery lunch. The terrain is flat and the bluff views are immediate. For something even shorter, try the Machens to Cuivre River section or the Weldon Spring access near Defiance.

Carry Water and Snacks

Towns are small and spaced out. Carry two bottles and calorie-dense snacks, and plan a refill stop at a trailside town like Augusta or Peers. Summer heat on the exposed river-bottom sections is real — ride early or in shoulder seasons.

Know the Surface After Rain

The limestone can soften and puddle after heavy rain, and the Missouri River floods nearby lowlands in spring. Check Trailnet and Missouri State Parks updates before driving out.

Respect Trail Etiquette

Keep right, pass on the left with a friendly call-out, and yield to walkers and horseback riders. The trail is shared, and a little courtesy keeps it welcoming for everyone.

With the right bike, water, and a short scenic section, the Katy Trail is one of the most rewarding beginner rides in the St. Louis region.
